Mosaic Murals

I have been spellbound by many beautiful mosaic murals in public spaces.  Inspired by other artists, I decided to make a mural along a 38 x 8 foot wall at the back of my studio. My talented collaborator and friend, Jose Reyes, joined me. We spent a year and a half creating this mural called “Joy”. I knew I wanted to use recycled materials and start with the sun and a bright, bold, colorful garden at the center. I wanted the energy to be dynamic, upbeat, and whimsical. I wanted us to create a piece full of surprises. There is a river running across much of the mural. I think of that as a world river walk. We incorporated previously used tiles, plates, figurines and more from many cultures and historical time periods. We used ceramic, terracotta, and even metal animals from ducks to frogs and birds. While the garden is the focal point there are multiple scenes including a Mexican farm, a Jamaican village, a Beatrix Potter-inspired English rose garden, a dog park, a tropical ocean and more. See how many animals (and a Day of the Dead skull) you can find in the Mexican farm. Have fun!

Vicky's collaborative mural is a beautiful work of art that's painstakingly put together. The flow and grandeur of the mural tell many stories. Every time I see it, I'm in awe of the hard work, talent, time, energy and dedication—and especially the love—that went into this piece. It’s amazing to me.

I’m lucky to call myself a friend, fan and collaborator of Vicky’s. ‘Joy’ is a larger-than-life mural that I saw take shape, piece by piece, for well over a year. The finished work feels warm, whimsical and surprising. I love each part of the mural and each of the stories it tells.

Notes on Mosaic Murals

Questions to Consider:

  • Residential or public?

  • What is the purpose of the mural?

  • Who is the primary audience? You, your family, a school, house of worship, local (or larger) community?

A Collaborative Process:

  • I will do my best to capture the mood and energy you would like to convey

  • There will be periodic reviews of the work in progress

  • I will incorporate as many pre-used materials as possible including some of your beloved ceramics, china or figurines

  • I can make murals of all sizes, including wall pieces that can be put up and later moved to another space if you move or prefer another location

  • I will work within an agreed-upon budget and timeframe

  • I will make the majority of the piece in my studio and then transfer it to your space
